Liam Williams is heading to college, and eagerly anticipates his independence. But for Cathleen, his mother, and Noah, his father, Liam's going is anything but easy. Both project their lost dreams of youth onto their only child, and when Cathleen leaves Noah alone upstate to drive Liam down through New York's Hudson Valley to his school, their separation becomes a moving story of learning how to come to grips with losing without letting go.
This weekend Liam's going away to college, and his mother, Cathleen Hogan Williams, is taking him there, driving south along the Hudson. For Liam, impatience to arrive at a new destination rubs against the anxiety of a future apart. For Cathleen, the trip has a second purpose: a long-suppressed love affair she had before conceiving him has resurfaced in a poem she is trying to write. Noah, her husband, endures the new separation at home...until an elderly Irish enchantress, a client of his law practice, leads him to recalculate what he himself may have left behind in his youth. For this couple, married and alone, Liam's going ripples outward across the surface of their marriage, the melange of their intertwining memories.
If you're going through a separation or divorce, wondering if there are other people out there that "get it," then this is the book for you. "One husband may be having an affair, one may be gay, one may be having a quarter life crisis and one may run away..." Before the candles on their thirtieth birthday cakes were blown out, the four authors found their marriages crumbling. They spent their twenties dedicating themselves to creating strong marriages but nothing they did could save them from divorce. Disliking the media's portrayal of young divorce as a starter marriage for the lazy, self indulgent, instant gratification types who hop into and out of marriage faster than they can have children, the authors share their stories to show the reality behind young divorce. They had every intention of being wed until death do them part, but they learned the hard way that sometimes love doesn't conquer all. Not only did the authors lack the bank accounts to take a year off and travel the world following their divorces, they barely had enough money to cover their rent. What they did have was each other. Their friendship was formed online and their bond became so strong that they now consider themselves sisters, divorce sisters. You'll laugh and cry with the authors as they share with you their heartfelt stories of young divorce and welcome you into their sisterhood. In the final chapter, they'll reveal their secrets for moving on after a divorce, embracing second chances and becoming young, divorced and fabulous Memorable Quotes from the divorce memoirs in Young, Divorced and Fabulous: "The phone rang, I answered it and the line went dead...I knew in my heart what was happening. I went up to the master bathroom as my husband was getting out of the shower. I handed him the phone and said, "She called." "On our second anniversary, he came home agitated and extremely stressed. I don't think I'd ever seen him that upset. He told me that our marriage wasn't working and that I deserved more than he could ever give me...He also said that he was probably gay." "He kissed me every day before leaving for work and told me he loved me, but the distance continued to grow between us. There was an unspoken tension. It came to a head one night at Wendy's...He blew up and yelled some profanity at me. He had never spoken to me this way in our relationship. I realized something was very, very wrong. I knew this fight had nothing to do with chicken sandwiches." "Our love of the church was no longer a priority for him either. What was once the foundation of our relationship was no more. I wanted God and the Catholic Church to be our guide. He refused this after we were married. He became completely apathetic to church and explained that the only reason he ever went was to please me. Eventually, he completely withdrew from me, my family, and even his family, escaping into his work."
Fiction. "DISAPPEARANCE is a magical tale of the struggle to make sense of a multilayered world in which change is the only thing to be sure of--to hold on to somehow--even when what you're holding is never still, and so making sense means letting go. Here games and game worlds are sometimes a metaphor of sorts, and sometimes more tangibly, technologically actual. Like Cronenberg's strange sci fi reverie, eXistenZ, in which 'real' and 'virtual' are twisted to the point where you no longer can tell them apart, in this novel games do something more than transport you to other dimensions or layers in time and space. They ultimately transform you, and you will never be the same. Then again, it appears that you were never the same anyway, but always other. Reading DISAPPEARANCE, I am other."--Jenny Sunden, author of Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures
Orbit the Angel Cat is a gentle meditation on the loss of life, care for the dying, and the abiding hope that love will always prevail.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 17.5 million Americans suffer from clinical depression. Each year, more than 132,000 people will consider suicide as a way out of depression and over 30,000 of them will succeed. The author became a statistic of the first two categories and was miraculously saved from the third. Ironically, he was reborn to a new reality through the intervention of a terminally ill friend as he wrote his school-aged son a desperate suicide letter. The letter grew longer and longer and eventually changed course and became this book. Something tragic and sad became an inspirational story of survival and perspective. This book is a riveting first hand account of not only depression, but more importantly his journey into and out of depression. The author describes his decent and climb from depression to his son in heartbreaking detail, from his childhood in the tough streets of Philadelphia to his battle with cancer, the deaths of his sister, mother and two best friends, all in a relatively short period of time. What make this book unique are the strategically intertwined positive lessons that were learned while facing these tragic, life-altering events. These lessons, appropriately named "Life Lessons," are heartfelt loving messages from a father to his son illustrating what the author believes to be the truths of life and what is truly important to him today. Desperate to pass on these imperative messages to the most important person in his world, the author expresses his feelings on such subjects as true success, stress and pressure, love, and family.
This book has its roots in a series of collaborations in the last decade at the interface between statistical physics and cosmology. The speci?c problem which initiated this research was the study of the clustering properties of galaxies as revealed by large redshift surveys, a context in which concepts of modern statistical physics (e. g. scale-invariance, fractality. . ) ?nd ready application. In recent years we have considerably broadened the range of problems in cosmology which we have addressed, treating in particular more theoretical issues about the statistical properties of standard cosmological models. What is common to all this research, however, is that it is informed by a perspective and methodology which is that of statistical physics. We can say that, beyond its speci?c scienti?c content, this book has an underlying thesis: such interdisciplinary research is an exciting playground for statistical physics, and one which can bring new and useful insights into cosmology. The book does not represent a ?nal point, but in our view, a marker in the development of this kind of research, which we believe can go very much further in the future. Indeed as we complete this book, new developments - which unfortunately we have not been able to include here - have been made on some of the themes described here. Our focus in this book is on the problem of structure in cosmology.
